ErgoPractice News – May 2017

Wireless LED headlamps have become one of the most popular headlamp options. The recent Clinicians Report compared several wireless LED headlamps.1 Using data published in this report you can select the best light for various dental procedures. Let’s discuss how to use these data and why SurgiTel’s Odyssey Wireless LED may be the best among wireless LED headlamps available today.

LED headlamps have to meet two primary requirements: 1) help users see the accurate color of objects and 2) not be harmful to the eyes. Secondary requirements may include weight, beam uniformity, brightness & control of brightness levels, switching sensitivity, price, etc.

All SurgiTel Wireless LED headlamps have been designed to provide users with color balanced lights which are safe to the eyes. Using patented achromatic beam-forming optics, SurgiTel offers a uniform achromatic beam that helps users see the accurate colors of objects.

Why SurgiTel Wireless LED headlamps?

White LED light consists of two spectral bands: blue spectral band and green/red spectral band (Figure 1). As the blue spectral band increases over the green/red spectral band, the correlated Kelvin temperature will increases. Figure 2 shows the Kelvin temperature scale LED colors. It is noted that if the beam-forming optics are not achromatic, the Kelvin temperature scale of an LED will vary across the beam spot and as the working distance changes.

SurgiTel headlamps use achromatic beam-forming optics and thus provide users with color balanced, even lights that offer the best color accuracy regardless of working distance and are also safe to eyes.

Features of SurgiTel wireless LED lights are:

  • Uniform, achromatic beam: The report shows SurgiTel’s achromatic, uniform beams which do not vary as the working distance varies. Also, the micro LED model provides the largest beam spot.
  • Color balanced neutral light: SurgiTel wireless LED lights are neutral lights (3900K to 4000K). Earlier Clinicians reports2,3 showed that neutral LED lights offer the best color accuracy and the safest to eyes. Research suggests that prolonged exposure to LED blue light, when magnified through loupe oculars, could cause retinal damage and could be a contributing factor to senile-macular degeneration.4
  • More Brightness levels: SurgiTel wireless LED lights can use either micro or mini beam-forming optics (interchangeable). With each beam-forming optics, three brightness levels are available. Note that the brightness can be selected and locked using the control pad.

The Clinicians Report notes “loupes and headlamps have become widely used in dentistry” and “cordless headlamps are gaining popularity because of their convenience and comfort.” They pointed out that “cordless headlamps are a viable option worth considering” and “next time you snag your headlamp cord and are feeling frustrated, switch to a cordless model.”

In conclusion, data published with the recent Clinicians Reports show how SurgiTel Wireless LED headlamps offer the best beam quality and safety with the added bonus of a hassle-free, cord-free workday.
